Today I read that China has stepped up its Internet censorship in anticipation of the 20 year anniversary of Tiananmen Square on June 4th. A thoughtful reader on Slashdot, a popular technical news forum, suggested that the "internet crowd" make June 4 an official Free Speech Day. He suggests that every website post a small banner or comment regarding freedom of speech so that it is very difficult for a government organization to censor the comments without blocking most of the Internet.

As I am strongly in favor of this idea, I have shown my support by registering the domain name freespeechday.com and encourage any one willing to participate to share ideas for this new website on the support forums .

The Ask Dave app is a variation of classic fortune-telling meme. The application features six 'lil Dave characters.
According to our web site, the last nine months have been pretty slow for Bindle Binaries. In truth, we were burning the midnight oil working on new projects, tackling contract work, and turning up a support site. In all of the commotion, the web site fell by the way side. This last week the website was brought into renewed focus. We imported the old news into the new support site and configured the Bindle Binaries web server to pull the support site's news feed. Hopefully this new system will allow the news on the Bindle Binaries website to stay up to date with the latest announcements from projects hosted by Bindle Binaries.

Our second iPhone application, mystic8ball, was finally approved by Apple. In the five days since its released, mystic8ball has climbed the charts to hold the 12th spot on the "Top Free Apps" in the iTunes App Store. After reading the reviews and reading support mail from users, we decided to modify mystic8ball to allow the answer to be changed by shaking the ball instead of flipping it face down. We submitted an updated version of the mystic8ball app to Apple late last night. It should be available for download in one to two weeks.

Last Wednesday we submitted an upgraded RPNCalc to Apple for inclusion in the app store. The upgraded RPNCalc has many new features. We will discuss these improvements once the upgrade has been approved by Apple. However, our beta testers have been using it for the last few days and have been giving us very favorable feedback about the new look and improvements. In addition, the beta testers have been request specific features and button layouts which will be included in the third release of RPNCalc. All currently planned upgrades to RPNCalc will be free for customers whom have already purchased a copy.

Finally, we are pleased to announce the submission of LuckyChip to Apple for acceptance into the iTunes App Store. LuckyChip is a spin off of the mystic8ball app and is intended for poker enthusiasts. This new app features a $100 poker chip which provides random advice for playing your hand at the table. We wrote this app at the request of Mike "Doc" Lilly from the Fort Worth Poker Network who had downloaded mystic8ball and desired something a little closer to his hobby. After a few e-mails and couple of test programs, we were able to provide the app that Doc wanted.

That about sums up the last twelve days at BindleBinaries. As usual, if you have any questions, suggestions, or issues, please contact David M. Syzdek at syzdek@bindlebinaries.net. We are always eager to receive feedback from customers.

I have spent many hours over the last few days responding to customers who have taken the time to write to us at BindleBinaries. Many wrote to give us "Atta-Boys," some wrote to provide suggestions, others wrote to request features, and a few wrote to report a bug. The amount of input and type of suggestions we have received has persuaded us to slightly modify our release plans for the next version. Initially, we planned to release version 2.0 which would include the skins (both landscape layouts and portrait layouts) mentioned in the previous news post, however we decided to write a quick update to add a few of the simpler feature requests and release it as version 1.1. We hope to have this minor release ready for beta testing by the end of the week and have it submitted to Apple by the end of next week. A few of the changes included in version 1.1 will be:

audio feedback for button presses

resized button areas to make buttons easier to press

new buttons that have a less "tacky" appearance than the original buttons

additional functions such as inverse trig functions

a replacement of the "x^y" button with a "y^x" button.

a fixed display problem in which an input string of "0.00000" was displayed as "0" until a digit between "1" and "9" was added.

After we have completed version 1.1, we will resume work on version 2.0 (which we hope to release within a month of version 1.1). We really appreciate all of the feedback (both good and bad) that we have received these last few days and look forward to hearing more from our customers. If you have any questions, requests, suggestions, or problems; please do not hesitate to email me at syzdek@bindlebinaries.net.

After a one week break to work on the support site, the team is back to working on RPNCalc . We had a slew of features slated for the first revision of the App, but due to time constraints we were unable to fully test them. Instead of releasing half tested features, we sadly decided to disable those features in the first release and post a calculator with a basic layout instead. Now that development has resumed, we plan on re-enabling the features, finish testing them, and posting the new version to the iTunes App Store as a free upgrade for those that whom have already purchased the current version. The features to be re-enabled include scientific calculator skins, financial calculator skins, programmer calculator skins, a unit conversion skin, and a common formulas skin. These skins will allow the user to change the appearance of the calculator by flicking from one button layout to another. Once our QA guy is satisfied with the appearance, we will post screen shots of the new version on the products page.
